Condition

This example exhibits cosmetic wear consistent with approximately fifteen years of service. Visible scuffs, scratches, and outlet wear are present throughout the enclosure. No evidence of melting, heat damage, cracking, or significant physical abuse was observed during exterior documentation.

Functional Testing

During archival documentation, a receptacle tester was connected to one of the AC outlets. The tester indicated correct wiring and grounding on the tested outlet. The Ground status indicator was illuminated during testing. The Surge status indicator was not illuminated.

Date Codes

The manufacturer label includes date code 0411. This is believed to indicate production during April 2011.

Teardown

Disassembly: Removal of the enclosure required extraction of seven enclosure screws and loosening of the retaining nuts securing the four coaxial surge protection connectors before the enclosure halves could be separated. The interior construction includes brass outlet contact assemblies, a resettable circuit breaker, surge protection circuitry, communications protection circuitry, and dedicated coaxial protection hardware mounted to the enclosure.

Removal of the enclosure revealed a traditional construction consisting of brass outlet contact strips, multiple printed circuit boards, dedicated communications protection circuitry, and hard-mounted coaxial protection connectors secured directly to the enclosure.

This example was photographed while still in active service prior to retirement. The unit remained operational at the time of documentation and represents one of the earliest entries in the OldSurge Archive.

The attached 14 AWG power cord terminates in a right-angle plug intended to reduce clearance requirements when connected to a wall receptacle. In the documented installation, the wall receptacle was mounted with the grounding slot positioned above the energized conductors, causing the right-angle plug to route upward from the outlet before descending toward the surge protector. The attached power cord is marked SJT 14 AWG x 3C with a VW-1 flame rating and a 60°C temperature rating. The cord terminates in a molded right-angle NEMA 5-15P plug.

The green Ground indicator was illuminated at the time of documentation. The red Surge indicator was not illuminated.

The underside of the enclosure includes integrated keyhole mounting slots, allowing the unit to be mounted to a wall or other flat surface and molded electrical ratings, manufacturing information, and injection-mold date indicators. Molded markings identify the unit as manufactured in China and confirm a suppressed voltage rating of 330 volts. Communications protection features include RJ11 telephone line protection and two independent coaxial surge protection paths using F-type connectors.
