Power Strips
A power strip, also known as a relocatable power tap (RPT), is a device that provides multiple electrical receptacles from a single power cord and plug. Unlike surge protectors, power strips do not necessarily provide protection from voltage transients or electrical surges. Many power strips consist solely of outlets, internal wiring, and, in some cases, an integrated circuit breaker and power switch.
Overview
Power strips are commonly used in homes, offices, workshops, entertainment systems, and information technology environments where additional power outlets are required. They are available in a wide range of outlet counts, cord lengths, and configurations.

- Multiple AC receptacles supplied from a single plug
- Typically rated for 15A, 125V AC in North America
- May include a resettable circuit breaker
- May include a power switch
- Available in a variety of outlet counts and cord lengths
- Usually classified as a relocatable power tap (RPT)
- Do not necessarily provide surge suppression
