Documented Example

  • OldSurge ID: OS-0004
  • Model: 33895-US
  • Manufacturing Date: April 2011

Physical Description

The Staples 33895-US utilizes a black enclosure with gray outlet accents and provides ten grounded AC outlets arranged in two rows. Communications protection features include RJ11 telephone-line protection and two independent coaxial surge-protection paths utilizing F-type connectors.

Status indicators labeled Ground and Surge are located near the control section. A resettable circuit breaker provides overcurrent protection.

The attached six-foot power cord utilizes an Apollo-manufactured SJT cable marked UL file number E176194 and CSA file number LL196777. Cord markings identify the assembly as a three-conductor 14 AWG cable rated for 60°C operation and carrying a VW-1 flame rating.

The power cord terminates in a molded right-angle NEMA 5-15P attachment plug intended to reduce clearance requirements behind furniture and office equipment. When used with receptacles installed in the grounding-pin-up orientation, the cord exits upward before bending downward toward the connected equipment.

The underside incorporates keyhole-style mounting slots for wall mounting and contains molded manufacturing information, electrical ratings, and certification markings.

Condition Upon Acquisition

The documented example was photographed while still in active service.

The enclosure exhibits cosmetic wear, scratches, and scuffing consistent with approximately fifteen years of use. No evidence of cracking, melting, significant discoloration, or overheating was observed during exterior examination.

Testing

The documented example was tested for basic electrical operation and wiring integrity. Testing with a receptacle tester confirmed correct outlet wiring and grounding. During testing, the Ground indicator illuminated normally, while the Surge indicator remained unlit despite the unit continuing to function as a power-distribution device.

Date Codes

The manufacturer label includes date code 0411. This is believed to indicate production during April 2011.

Teardown

The Staples 33895-US can be opened non-destructively by removing seven enclosure screws and loosening the retaining nuts securing the coaxial connectors.

Removal of the enclosure reveals traditional construction utilizing brass outlet-contact assemblies, multiple printed circuit boards, a resettable circuit breaker, dedicated telephone-line protection circuitry, and separate coaxial surge-protection assemblies mounted directly to the enclosure.

Additional examination beneath the primary power circuit board revealed a large filtering inductor, multiple surge-suppression components, and a JOEMEX 15 A resettable circuit breaker.

Removal of the enclosure revealed a traditional construction consisting of brass outlet contact strips, multiple printed circuit boards, dedicated communications protection circuitry, and hard-mounted coaxial protection connectors secured directly to the enclosure.

After removal of four mounting screws, the primary power circuit board was carefully lifted to document the components mounted beneath it. Inspection revealed multiple surge suppression components, a large filtering inductor, and a JOEMEX 15A resettable circuit breaker. Slight discoloration was observed on the underside of the main PCB after approximately fifteen years of service. No obvious evidence of catastrophic component failure, damaged traces, cracked solder joints, or melted components was identified during visual inspection.

Notes

This example was photographed while still in active service prior to retirement. The unit remained operational at the time of documentation and represents one of the earliest entries in the OldSurge Archive.

The attached 14 AWG power cord terminates in a right-angle plug intended to reduce clearance requirements when connected to a wall receptacle. In the documented installation, the wall receptacle was mounted with the grounding slot positioned above the energized conductors, causing the right-angle plug to route upward from the outlet before descending toward the surge protector. The attached power cord is an Apollo-manufactured SJT cable marked UL file number E176194 and CSA file number LL196777. Cord markings identify the assembly as a three-conductor 14 AWG cable with a VW-1 flame rating and a 60°C temperature rating. The cord terminates in a molded right-angle NEMA 5-15P plug.

The green Ground indicator was illuminated at the time of documentation. The red Surge indicator was not illuminated.

The underside of the enclosure includes integrated keyhole mounting slots, allowing the unit to be mounted to a wall or other flat surface and molded electrical ratings, manufacturing information, and injection-mold date indicators. Molded markings identify the unit as manufactured in China and confirm a suppressed voltage rating of 330 volts. Communications protection features include RJ11 telephone line protection and two independent coaxial surge protection paths using F-type connectors.
