APC SurgeArrest Professional

APC SurgeArrest Professional units acquired by the OldSurge Archive.

Overview

APC SurgeArrest Professional was a family of surge protectors manufactured by APC (American Power Conversion).

The SurgeArrest Professional product line provided surge suppression and power distribution for computer, networking, home office, and consumer electronics applications. Models within the family were available with varying outlet counts, cord lengths, and protection features.

The documented examples provide an opportunity to compare nearly two decades of production changes within the PRO7 product line, including suppression-board revisions marked ©1996, ©2002, and ©2009 across multiple production generations.

Collection Acquisition

In September 2026, the OldSurge Archive acquired a lot of twelve APC SurgeArrest Professional surge protectors for preservation and documentation.

The units were shipped loose within a cardboard box without visible packing material or dividers. Despite the lack of protective packaging, the surge protectors arrived in their advertised condition and are being evaluated for documentation, testing, and possible teardown.

Safety Information

Certain APC SurgeArrest products were subject to a product recall announced in 2013.

For additional information, see:

Not all APC SurgeArrest products documented by the OldSurge Archive were affected by the recall.

Documented Examples

Thumbnail Model Serial Number Manufacturing Date Status Notable Characteristics Article
PRO7 Z94030204087 1994 Documented Earliest documented PRO7 specimen; recall-period example; ©1993 suppression board; alternate logo style; heavily worn power-switch markings APC SurgeArrest Professional PRO7 (Z94030204087)
PRO7 Z98010201706 1998 Documented ©1996 PCB revision; recall-period specimen; substantially heavier than later examples APC SurgeArrest Professional PRO7 (Z98010201706)
PRO7 2Z0250P17876 December 2002 Documented Recall-period specimen; earliest documented ©2002 PCB revision; uniquely APC-branded attachment plug; internal date-code wheels confirm December 2002 manufacture APC SurgeArrest Professional PRO7 (2Z0250P17876)
PRO7 4Z0842P07546 September 2008 Documented Significant enclosure yellowing; ©2002 PCB revision; dim Protection Working indicator APC SurgeArrest Professional PRO7 (4Z0842P07546)
PRO7 7Z1714L05335 January 2017 Documented Minimal enclosure discoloration; ©2009 PCB revision; teardown completed APC SurgeArrest Professional PRO7 (7Z1714L05335)

The documented examples currently span at least 1994 through 2017 production.

The 1994, 1998, 2002, 2008, and 2017 specimens provide an opportunity to compare more than two decades of product evolution, including changes in branding, enclosure aging, weight, indicator brightness, suppression-board revisions, attachment-plug design, and internal construction.

Comparison Notes

The APC SurgeArrest Professional PRO7 examples currently documented by the OldSurge Archive span approximately twenty-three years of production, from 1994 through 2017.

The documented examples presently include:

Year Serial Number PCB Weight Notable Change
1994 Z94030204087 ©1993 1 lb 14.8 oz Earliest logo; straight-blade plug
1998 Z98010201706 ©1996 1 lb 15.9 oz Heaviest documented example
2002 2Z0250P17876 ©2002 1 lb 11.3 oz APC-logo plug
2008 4Z0842P07546 ©2002 1 lb 9.9 oz Significant yellowing
2017 7Z1714L05335 ©2009 1 lb 9.6 oz Latest documented example

Despite sharing the same model designation, the documented examples exhibit notable differences in enclosure aging, weight, suppression-board revisions, branding, indicator brightness, attachment-plug construction, and internal architecture.

The documented specimens demonstrate not only multiple suppression-board generations but also changes in product branding and visual identity.

The documented examples also demonstrate a gradual reduction in weight over time, declining from approximately 1 lb 15.9 oz (903 g) in 1998 to 1 lb 9.6 oz (726 g) in 2017 despite retaining substantially similar external dimensions and functionality.

The 1994 unit sports an early Professional SurgeArrest logo design that differs noticeably from later documented examples and is currently the only documented PRO7 equipped with a straight-blade attachment plug.

The 1998 example weighs the most out of all of the documented units and exhibits less enclosure discoloration than the 2008 specimen.

The December 2002 unit occupies an especially important position within the documented timeline. It represents the earliest documented APC PRO7 utilizing the ©2002 suppression-board generation and demonstrates APC's transition away from the earlier ©1996 design while remaining within the manufacturing period covered by the 2013 APC SurgeArrest recall.

The documented specimens currently illustrate at least four suppression-board generations:

  • ©1993 PCB (1994 specimen)
  • ©1996 PCB (1998 specimen)
  • ©2002 PCB (2002 and 2008 specimens)
  • ©2009 PCB (2017 specimen)

Although the overall enclosure design remained remarkably consistent throughout production, APC implemented gradual changes to branding, attachment-plug design, suppression circuitry, weight, and other construction details while retaining the characteristic seven-outlet layout and site-wiring diagnostic features.
