Overview

The APC SurgeArrest Professional PRO7 is a consumer surge protector designed to provide surge suppression and power distribution for computers, peripherals, networking equipment, and other electronic devices.

Like other members of the PRO7 family, the unit incorporates seven grounded outlets, APC's Protection Working and Site Wiring Fault indicators, a rocker power switch, and a six-foot power cord.

The documented example was manufactured during 2015 and represents one of the latest production examples currently preserved by the OldSurge Archive. It occupies an important position within the documented APC PRO7 timeline by helping bridge the gap between the archive's 2008 and 2017 specimens.

Historical Context

The APC SurgeArrest Professional PRO7 family remained in production for more than two decades and underwent multiple internal revisions while retaining a remarkably consistent external appearance.

Documented examples preserved by the archive currently span 1994 through 2017 production and include at least five suppression-board generations carrying copyright dates of ©1993, ©1996, ©1997, ©2002, and ©2009.

The documented example post-dates APC's transition from Chinese to Philippine manufacturing and represents a late-production member of the product family. Its manufacture during 2015 places it near the end of the PRO7's documented production history.

Unlike earlier recall-period examples manufactured during the 1990s and early 2000s, the documented example represents APC's mature implementation of the PRO7 platform and may help document changes introduced during the final years of production.

Weight

The documented example weighs approximately 1 lb 9.6 oz (726 g).

The measured weight is identical to that of the archive's documented 2006 and 2017 PRO7 specimens. This consistency suggests that APC made few significant changes to overall material usage during the final decade of PRO7 production despite ongoing revisions to manufacturing methods, labeling practices, cord suppliers, and internal circuitry.

Compared with earlier documented examples manufactured during the 1990s, the 2015 specimen is noticeably lighter. The archive's 1998 and 1999 examples weigh approximately 1 lb 15.9 oz (903 g) and 1 lb 15.8 oz (902 g) respectively, illustrating the substantial weight reduction that occurred over the product family's production life.

Physical Characteristics

The documented example utilizes APC's long-established two-piece PRO7 enclosure design, consisting of a rounded upper housing containing the surge-suppression electronics and a rectangular lower section supporting seven grounded receptacles.

A non-illuminated rocker power switch is positioned near the cord-entry end of the enclosure. Adjacent Protection Working and Site Wiring Fault indicators provide visual confirmation of surge-protection status and receptacle-wiring condition. A resettable circuit breaker is also located at the cord-entry end of the housing.

The enclosure measures approximately 10.25 inches (26.0 cm) long, 4.19 inches (10.6 cm) wide, and 1.75 inches (4.4 cm) tall.

The documented example utilizes a six-foot I-SHENG-manufactured SJT 14/3 power cord incorporating three 14 AWG conductors. Cord markings indicate a 300-volt rating together with VW-1 flame-resistance compliance.

Power is supplied through a molded right-angle NEMA 5-15P attachment plug. As with other late-production PRO7 specimens documented by the archive, the plug routes the cord upward when installed on modern receptacles utilizing the now-common grounding-pin-up orientation. Unlike certain earlier documented PRO7 examples, the plug body does not incorporate APC branding.

Unlike several earlier documented PRO7 specimens that incorporate electrical ratings and regulatory information directly into the molded enclosure, the documented example utilizes adhesive regulatory-information labels. The labels incorporate APC by Schneider Electric branding and identify the unit as manufactured in the Philippines.

The exterior plastic exhibits light yellowing and minor cosmetic wear consistent with normal long-term use but remains in above-average cosmetic condition compared with several earlier documented PRO7 specimens. In particular, discoloration is noticeably less pronounced than on the archive's 2006 and 2008 examples.

The overall appearance remains highly consistent with other late-production members of the PRO7 family and demonstrates APC's continued use of the established SurgeArrest Professional enclosure design despite numerous internal revisions throughout the product line's production history.

Photographs

Date Codes

The serial-number label identifies the documented example as serial number 7Z1550L09782 and confirms manufacture in the Philippines.

Additional manufacturing evidence is present within the enclosure. Molded date wheels incorporated into the upper housing indicate manufacture during September 2015, while date wheels molded into the lower enclosure section indicate manufacture during October 2015.

The differing dates are consistent with production of the plastic enclosure components during separate manufacturing runs prior to final assembly. Similar variations have been observed on other documented APC products and reflect normal manufacturing practices rather than conflicting production information.

The documented example is notable for preserving independent manufacturing-date evidence from both enclosure halves, helping establish a production timeframe immediately preceding final assembly.

Condition Upon Acquisition

The documented example was acquired in used condition and exhibited accumulated dust, light surface contamination, and minor cosmetic wear consistent with normal long-term residential or office use.

The enclosure displayed modest yellowing but remained noticeably lighter in color than several earlier documented APC PRO7 specimens. No significant cracking, deformation, melting, or other evidence of severe environmental exposure was observed.

A prominent dark scuff mark was present on the upper enclosure near the Site Wiring Fault indicator. Minor scratches, handling marks, and localized dirt accumulation were also visible throughout the housing and power cord.

The attached power cord, strain relief, attachment plug, outlets, indicators, and enclosure remained intact with no obvious evidence of physical abuse or electrical failure.

The unit was cleaned prior to detailed photography, testing, and further documentation.

Functional Testing

The documented example was tested for basic electrical operation, indicator functionality, and outlet wiring integrity.

When connected to a properly wired receptacle and switched on, the green Protection Working indicator illuminated as intended while the red Site Wiring Fault indicator remained unlit.

Testing with a receptacle tester confirmed correct hot, neutral, and ground connections at the protected outlets. No open grounds, open neutrals, reversed polarity conditions, or other wiring faults were detected.

The rocker power switch operated normally and successfully controlled power to the protected outlets throughout testing.

The documented example passed all functional testing performed during documentation and remained fully operational at the time of examination.

Teardown

The APC SurgeArrest Professional PRO7 enclosure is secured using multiple Phillips-head screws and can be opened non-destructively.

Removal of the upper housing revealed an internal construction layout closely resembling that of the archive's documented 2017 PRO7 specimen. The design incorporates a dedicated surge-suppression circuit board, a resettable circuit breaker, rocker power switch, discrete wiring harnesses, and a stamped-metal outlet-contact assembly serving all seven receptacles.

Power enters through a molded strain-relief assembly before passing through the circuit breaker, power switch, surge-suppression circuitry, and outlet-contact assembly. The receptacle section utilizes a long stamped-metal contact carrier extending the length of the enclosure and providing both electrical distribution and mechanical support for the outlet contacts.

The underside of the surge-suppression circuit board incorporates substantial copper power traces designed to carry full load current to the outlet assembly. Overall construction quality, board mounting, wiring layout, and mechanical design are consistent with other late-production PRO7 specimens preserved by the archive.

The surge-suppression assembly utilizes APC circuit board 640-0381A-Z REV06 carrying a ©2009 copyright marking. The board incorporates multiple metal-oxide varistors (MOVs), a wire-wound suppression inductor, filtering capacitors, indicator circuitry, and associated support components. The MOV network is arranged between line, neutral, and grounding conductors to provide protection against transient overvoltage events appearing between any combination of the three conductors.

The documented example is notable for preserving stamped identifying markings on the internal grounding-bar assembly. The grounding bar is marked 1890-0002 together with revision identifier A and the marking PMC. The significance of these markings has not been determined, but they may identify a component supplier, tooling source, or internal part number. Comparable markings have not previously been documented on other archived PRO7 specimens.

No evidence of overheating, arcing, cracked solder joints, damaged conductors, outlet-contact deterioration, failed MOVs, or other significant electrical damage was observed. Internal components appeared clean and consistent with normal long-term residential use.

Recall Information

The PRO7 product family was affected by historical APC recalls involving certain earlier production periods.

No evidence presently suggests that serial number 7Z1550L09782 falls within the documented recall population.

Comparison Notes

The documented example occupies an important position within the archive's APC PRO7 chronology, bridging the gap between the 2008 specimen (4Z0842P07546) and the 2017 specimen (7Z1714L05335).

Compared with the 2008 specimen, the enclosure exhibits noticeably less discoloration despite being only seven years newer. The difference suggests that storage conditions and environmental exposure may have contributed as much to enclosure yellowing as age alone.

The documented example utilizes APC suppression board 640-0381A-Z REV06 carrying a ©2009 copyright marking. This is the same suppression-board generation documented in the archive's 2017 specimen and indicates that APC continued manufacturing PRO7 units using the ©2009 design for at least several years.

The unit also shares several characteristics with the archive's 2017 specimen, including Philippine manufacture, an I-SHENG-manufactured SJT 14/3 power cord, a right-angle attachment plug, and a documented weight of approximately 1 lb 9.6 oz (726 g). These similarities suggest that relatively few changes were made during the final years of PRO7 production.

Unlike earlier documented specimens manufactured during the 1990s, the documented example utilizes an adhesive regulatory-information label rather than molded electrical-rating information. The label incorporates APC by Schneider Electric branding and may reflect revised manufacturing practices adopted during late-production Philippine manufacture.

The documented example utilizes an unbranded right-angle attachment plug. Earlier documented PRO7 specimens incorporated straight-blade attachment plugs or plugs bearing APC branding, indicating another minor evolution within the product family.

The documented example weighs exactly the same as both the archive's 2006 and 2017 specimens, suggesting that APC made relatively few structural or material changes during the final decade of PRO7 production.

The teardown additionally documented stamped markings on the internal grounding-bar assembly, including part number 1890-0002 revision A and the marking "PMC." Comparable markings have not previously been documented on other archived PRO7 specimens and may represent a supplier, tooling, or component-identification marking. Additional examination of earlier specimens may help determine whether these markings are unique to later production examples or simply escaped notice during earlier documentation efforts.
